The Tories are to back controversial government plans to introduce ID cards, the party has said.
The shadow cabinet announced its support ahead of next Monday's Commons vote on a bill to introduce them.
Tory leader Michael Howard had reportedly faced resignation threats by those opposed to the scheme.
The government argues the cards will tackle crime, terrorism and illegal immigration, but the Liberal Democrats say the plans are "deeply flawed". They have vowed to oppose the plans which they say are a waste of money.
Sources within the Conservative Party told the BBC that Michael Howard has always been in favour of ID cards, and point to his attempts to introduce them during the last Tory administration. BBC News
